How to add a delivery or pickup date to the Shopify cart

Ask customers for a date before checkout, only offer days you can make it, and see the date on every order.

The short answer

Shopify doesn't ask customers for a delivery or collection date by itself. You can add a box to the cart with theme code, or use an app that adds a calendar and only offers the days you can fulfil.

What you can do with Shopify alone

  • The cart's order note. Customers type a date in any format, or forget, and nothing stops a closed day or a date that's too soon.
  • A date field in your theme's code. Saves the date on the order, but knows nothing about your closed days or notice, and it can disappear when you change or update your theme.
  • A product option called “Collection date”. Turns every date into a variant, and still can't grey out the days you're closed.

Add a date picker in a few minutes

  1. Add Blackout Dates and switch on the Date Picker Embed under App embeds in the theme editor. When a customer heads to checkout, they pick their date first.
  2. Prefer the calendar on the cart page itself? Add the Date Picker Redirect block to your cart section too. No code either way.
  3. Choose how customers get their order on Delivery: pickup or local delivery on Free, and postal or several methods on Plus and Pro.
  4. Add your closed days on Store Closed Dates and your prep days on Settings, Timing & hours, so too-soon and closed days are greyed out.

The setup guide walks through each click.

Offer collection times

Split your pickup hours into time slots under When you're open for pickup on Settings, Timing & hours, so customers choose a time as well as a day. On Plus and Pro, cap how many orders each slot takes.

The date on the order and the email

The chosen date is saved on the order, so you see it in your Shopify admin. Paste one snippet into your order confirmation email and the customer sees it too: email & checkout setup.

Good to know

  • Once it's on, the Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and “Buy it now” buttons on product and cart pages are hidden, because they skip the date step. Every payment method still shows at checkout.
  • Orders from the Shop app or a social channel can skip the date picker; those arrive without a date and aren't tagged. An online store order that reaches checkout without a date, for example from a direct checkout link, is tagged blackout-no-date, so you can ask the customer.
